A trip through the studio landscape of sculptor Peter Forakis is entering a strangely familiar land of earth, wood, sky, light and lots of sculpted steel in various configurations and states of oxidation. The shapes are future-primitive and playful, with a hard edge but an inner balance where order meets chaos. One is reminded of the sheer pleasure of living and creating on planet earth. This collection of photos, taken at his former studios at the old Grange Hall on Bodega Highway west of Petaluma, might be seen as a composite portrait of Peter, his surroundings, and a bit of his work from models to finished pieces.

Peter Forakis has long been associated with the New York art world and was a member of the group of 70-80 artists chosen by collector Martha Jackson under the banner of New Forms-New Media in the early 1960s. This was a group who were not involved in the abstract expressionism of the day but who were pushing into new realms under the tags, ”minimalist”,“pop”, “constructivist” and “non-objective” art.

This included artists such as Claus Oldenburg, Robert Rauchenburg, Frank Stella, Charles Ginniver, Mark di Suvero, Donald Judd, Lucas Samaras, Jasper Johns, Robert Indiana, and many other notables.

The international art publishing house Skira is soon to publish a book, authored by Claudine Humblet focused on this group, including a section on Peter and his wide ranging sculptural creations.
