Sacre Coeur
From the earliest days,
the hill of Montmarte has been a place of worship: the Druids,
the Gauls, the Romans who built a temple in honor of Mars, and
beginning in the third century, Christian, when Saint Denis became
the first bishop of Paris. The great basilica of Sacre-Coeur
was constructed in period from 1875-1914, consecrated to the Heart
of Christ in reparation for the brutality and chaos that swept
the area during the Franco Prussian War and the workers uprising
(Paris Commune) of 1871.
