Paris is one of
most beautiful cities of the world, a true City of Light.
Although humans have been living in the fertile Paris
basin, with its River Seine, for tens of thousands of
years, the recent historical epic began in 52 BC when Roman
soldiers occupied the area. Here they found a Celtic tribe
called the Parisii that lived by fishing, occupying what is
now known as Isle de la Cite in the rivers midst. Julius
Caesar described these people as clever, inventive,
and given to quarreling among themselves. This description
can still be applied today as Parisians are known for their
creativity and their strong political passions. (continued

Isle de la Cite, with its
great Cathedral of Notre Dame completed in the mid
1200s is still the heart of the City, which has greatly expanded
on both sides of the River. Paris is laid out with classical
sensibilities, according to plans that have developed over
hundreds of years. Its population is now approximately 2.5
million. It is a world center of learning and the arts. Thousands
of actors, musicians, painters, and writers work or study
here, attracted by the special atmosphere of freedom and aesthetic
appreciation.
